What Is an Image Enlarger?

An image enlarger makes a picture physically bigger by increasing its pixel dimensions (width × height). A 400 × 300 image enlarged 2x becomes 800 × 600: four times as many pixels, so the picture takes up more screen space and prints larger.

How Does Image Enlargement Work?

When an image is enlarged, the browser places the original pixels on a larger grid and estimates the colors of all the new pixels in between. This process is called interpolation or resampling. The canvas-based tool in this page uses high-quality resampling so the new pixels blend smoothly with the originals.

An important limit: interpolation estimates, it does not invent. If a detail was so small it occupied half a pixel in the original, no enlargement method can fully recreate it. That is why starting from the largest and cleanest version you have gives the best outcome.
